Saint Francis of Assisi famously said, “Let us begin again, for up to now we have done nothing.” Each day is a new start to make a difference in the world around you, to soak up God’s mercy and love for you, and to try again to be the best version of yourself for the Lord.
A Capuchin Franciscan, Saint Lawrence of Brindisi was a scholar, administrator, preacher, and lover of the poor. Versed in many languages, Saint Lawrence was an outstanding scripture scholar and used his knowledge of the holy writings to produce many homilies. He served his community as Minister General and served the papacy as an emissary and peacemaker.
It’s probably not difficult to recall times in our life’s journey when we were “lost and wayward.” We really needed to be found again through God’s love and care for us. Then too, we may have been helpful to others when the Lord used us as his shepherd.
War, disease, and political unrest make living in this century hard work at times. But as Christians, the challenge before us is to find hope in the darkest moments and seek for a peaceful world.
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray, and provides us with the words for the “Our Father.”
Unwilling to take no for an answer, Saint Apollinaris was exiled from Ravenna several times, but he always returned trying to preach the good news to the people. He finally died of a beating he received in a suburb of Ravenna.
In countless ways, Saint Francis of Assisi celebrated and preached the Incarnation. Jesus came to reveal in his humanity the awesome reality of who God is for us. In Jesus we see “the human face of God.” The God Francis reflected was a God of love, forgiveness and mercy.
Jesus launches into a focused program of instruction. He teaches the people gathered on the lakeshore in his own particular way. “He spoke to them at length in parables.” This is an important moment in Jesus’ teaching mission.
We sometimes get so caught up in fear it’s hard to remember all we have to be grateful for, and yet there’s an array of things–an abundance.
