Sharing the Word for October 12, 2022

Wednesday of the Twenty-eighth Week in Ordinary Time

October 12, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 11:42-46

It’s good to perform religious practices like prayer and acts of reverence. But we have to perform them with attention of the heart. Otherwise these actions are mere formalities and can lead us to believe that we’re being religious when we’re only putting on a show–for others or for ourselves.

In today’s reading Jesus condemns the Pharisees on several counts. They’re more attentive to their own ego than to the love of God. Being important is very important to them. Their teaching makes God’s law–which is supposed to be a source of joy–into a set of burdens. This is not the kind of religious practice that’s pleasing to God.

How sincere am I in my religious practices?
