Saint Bonaventure was in many ways the second founder of the Franciscan Order. He served as the Minister General of the Franciscans and as the Cardinal Bishop of Albano. Through his teaching, writing, and mysticism, Bonaventure captured the spirit of Saint Francis and renewed the order accordingly.
Further opposition to Jesus by the Pharisees. The disciples are picking grain on the Sabbath. Therefore Jesus’ disciples are not observing the law, and Jesus seems to be approving their non-compliance. It’s easy to judge others, but when we do we may find Jesus judging us in return.
There are people in our midst and around the world who for the most part, go unseen. As a society and as individuals, we’re almost programmed to be blind to these human beings–many of whom live on the margins. May we lift up these “others” in our world through prayer.
In the past year, I have heard story after story—in the news, from friends and families and even at my own dinner table—about kids being bullied. It’s rampant. It’s everywhere. As we’ve unfortunately witnessed time and time again, it can be deadly.
And it needs to stop.
I know, I know. Bullying has gone on for years. I’m sure most of us can recount a story of it from our youth. There are even debates as to whether the media are jumping on the stories of suicides brought on by bullying and overblowing the concept of kids being “bullied to death.”
Known as the Lily of the Mohawks, Saint Kateri Tekakwitha courageously converted to Catholicism at age 19 despite her family’s disapproval. She was ostracized and forced into extreme poverty. Escaping to Montreal, Kateri continued to live a life of prayer and penance.
Jesus is the answer to all our troubles and burdens. He lightens them either by increasing our strength, or by clarifying our perceptions, or simply by taking this or that burden off our shoulders.
Equality is something that every individual deserves and seeks, simply because of their humanity. Unfortunately, it is not always reflected in society and daily life. As members of the body of Christ, it is our duty to work with our brothers and sisters to ensure that all are welcome at the table.
In this week’s Gospel, Jesus encourages the anxious and worried Martha to follow the example of Mary and take the time to just sit and listen. What a good lesson for all of us.
Saint Henry, a German king and Holy Roman Emperor, lived life according to the customs of his times, but did it in a holy way. He is a clear witness to the holiness of secular life lived according to the gospel norms.
Last Sunday the story of the Good Samaritan urged us to take a risk to become involved with others as a true neighbor. Today we have the “how-to” of Christian neighborliness.
