When Sister Maria Louise Edwards encountered the remains of a little girl in the desert borderland between the United States and Mexico, she exclaimed: “This little girl mattered!” Although the child’s name was never discovered, her existence certainly mattered to God.
Saint Francis Solano asked to be sent to Africa as a missionary. Instead he was sent to South America, where he spent the rest of his life. After years of ministry in Argentina, Bolivia, and Paraguay, he died in the city of Lima, Peru.
Often when children want to be heard they will simply continue to raise their voices until someone takes notice. As we grow older we still want to have our voices heard, but we know that yelling is usually ineffective. There are other ways, though, and we also can speak through our actions.

Further opposition to Jesus by the Pharisees. The disciples are picking grain on the Sabbath. Therefore Jesus’ disciples are not observing the law, and Jesus seems to be approving their non-compliance. It’s easy to judge others, but when we do we may find Jesus judging us in return.
There are people in our midst and around the world who for the most part, go unseen. As a society and as individuals, we’re almost programmed to be blind to these human beings–many of whom live on the margins. May we lift up these “others” in our world through prayer.
In the past year, I have heard story after story—in the news, from friends and families and even at my own dinner table—about kids being bullied. It’s rampant. It’s everywhere. As we’ve unfortunately witnessed time and time again, it can be deadly.
And it needs to stop.
I know, I know. Bullying has gone on for years. I’m sure most of us can recount a story of it from our youth. There are even debates as to whether the media are jumping on the stories of suicides brought on by bullying and overblowing the concept of kids being “bullied to death.”
