God led Francis in and through the depths of suffering to come to know Christ.

Our temptation is to admire saints from such a distance that we forget they were still human beings who cooperated with God’s grace.

To accept some degree of meaninglessness is our final and full act of faith that God is still good and still in control.

God looks at us and sees the beauty of who we are, and that beauty is not a result of our being perfect.

Francis was as much subject to self-doubt as any of us. His motives were purified in prayer; his ego became right-sized there.

It is our mother who will never forget. It is our mother who will always find her child.
