There are lots of strange, unusual, uncomfortable, even eerie things going on in this nativity reading from the Gospel of Luke. Yet God is merely keeping his promises as he always does.

At Christmas we celebrate not just the human birth of Christ our savior, but also the ongoing relationship of an eternally loving father toward his children.

As we approach the celebration of the birth of Christ at Christmas, God addresses his message of salvation to us: “Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is at hand.”

As we approach the celebration of Jesus’ birth, the Church invites us to give thanks for God’s intervention in the affairs of humanity, to take joy in the Lord.

We are called to find joy and gladness and gratitude and pleasure in God. We are called to sing to him because of his goodness and because of the loving and lasting plans for us that he keeps in his heart.

We associate with the Lord and his creation by striving for cleanness of heart, by desiring what is precious in his sight, by seeking the face of God. We relate to him by submission to his will.

There are times when we don’t know what to do. God doesn’t generally send us an angel to lead us, but he always finds a way to point us in the right direction.
