Regardless of our political perspective, we recognize that we are in a troubled time in which we cannot sit on the sidelines and trust our future and the future of the planet solely to our political leaders.

Jesus challenged the man with paralysis with the words, “Pick up your mat and walk” (Jn 5:1–8). To have abundant life, he needed to act.

When she could no longer protest injustice, Dorothy Day asserted that “I can still pray.” We can always do something to change the world.

Jesus asked a man with paralysis, “Do you want to be healed?” (Jn 5:1–8) Jesus asks the same question of us in our personal and public lives.

The way of Jesus challenges us to embrace the pain and joy of the world and respond courageously and lovingly as God’s healing companions to those who suffer.

If we are faithful to God, heaven will take care of itself. Seek God’s realm in this life. In the here and now, our kin need to us bring God’s joy to the world.
