Reading Scripture

Reflect

Reading a book can be a very spiritual experience. Through the words on a page, we are transported to other times, other places, other worlds, other lives. Whether it’s an Agatha Christie mystery, a Narnia fantasy or Tolstoy’s War and Peace, reading can transform us by taking us on a journey and teaching us how to make sense of it. Getting lost in a book, a story, a poem can become a moment of transfiguration for us. How much more so, if the author of that book is God?

Pray

Lord,
Open my eyes and let me read your word more clearly,
Open my ears to your word, let me hear your voice more deeply,
And open my heart to your word and let me be filled
with the love that is always found in you.

Act

Set aside 20 minutes in your day to read and ponder God’s word. Start with one of the Gospels or the Psalms. Set a timer and read for 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, pause your reading and ask yourself what stood out to you. Was there a phrase or a word that made you curious? Confused? Uncomfortable? Encouraged? Why? Write it down. Let that word or phrase, that curiosity or discomfort become part of your prayer. Or as an icebreaker the next time you talk with your local priest.
