Tuesday of the Ninth Week in Ordinary Time

June 6, 2023
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Tobit 2:9-14

The story of Tobit is about divine providence, but there’s a great deal of further religious instruction in it too.

The book calls for prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It presents the Jewish family as a means of preserving the ancestral religion of the Jews. It highlights the possibility of remaining in touch with God and the Jewish law even in the difficult circumstances of exile. Its insistence on the value of faithfulness was highly relevant to circumstances that brought undeserved difficulties to those who strove to remain faithful. It affirms the importance of community and moves its readers from despair to prayer.

God’s fidelity may remain hidden, but human events can be the setting for God’s care. These are useful lessons for us too.
