Sharing the Word for June 5, 2023 – Ninth Week in Ordinary Time – Year 1

Memorial of Saint Boniface

June 5, 2023
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Tobit 1:3; 2:1a-8

The Lectionary next provides six readings from the Book of Tobit. However, we only hear two of them since Lent begins on Wednesday and the Lenten readings take over.

Tobit is a virtuous Jew living in exile in Nineveh. He is law-abiding and charitable, but has become blind in the course of his charitable activities. In Ecbatana–far away–a relative Sarah, is beset by a demon who has killed seven of Sarah’s husbands on their wedding night. God intervenes in their lives through the agency of an angel, and they all come together in happiness at the end of the story.

The moral of the story is that divine providence acts to help people with their problems. It did then and it does now.
