Jesus was criticized for the people with whom he hung around. Jesus is still interested in those who are on the margins–who need attention and healing. That’s why he bothers with us.
Even the most difficult of people need our love. While we may not be as successful in taming the wild beasts in others as Saint Francis was, we can still see them as God’s beloved children, with the same basic needs as ourselves.
The Overseas Lay Mission program broadened this woman’s understanding of Franciscan mission being rooted in a ministry of presence and accompaniment.
Around the year 64, the city of Rome experienced a devastating fire. Emperor Nero blamed it on the Christians, and a severe persecution followed. Included in the mass murder of Christians were the First Martyrs of the Church. We don’t know their names, but their witness to the faith is certain.
Jesus is still powerful today. He still forgives sins. He still reaches out to the sick. All he requires from us is confidence in his power.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends out 72 disciples on mission. He urges them to bring a message of peace as they announce that the Kingdom of God is at hand.
We celebrate two great saints today, Saints Peter and Paul. Saint Peter is often considered the Apostle to the Jews and Saint Paul to the Gentiles (based, most probably, on his extensive travels among the Gentiles). Together they witnessed to the budding of Christianity, and both laid down their lives for the faith.
