Today’s Gospel is about preparedness, and having our priorities straight. Luke wanted his community to hear Jesus’ stern words about being prepared for the Master’s return. He also wanted them to hear Christ’s admonition about priorities. When more is entrusted to you, more will be expected.
If we are going to benefit from what Jesus and his apostles came to deliver we have to be receptive, and keep asking Jesus for what we need.

Eusebius of Vercelli, spent most of his episcopal life defending the Church against the Arians. Also a defender of Saint Athanasius, whom the emperor wanted to punish, Saint Eusebius suffered death threats and harassment. But he continued to remain faithful and hopeful.
We are not at the mercy of the forces of evil. Jesus will keep us from sinking. At the same time we cannot deal with the evil around us as if we were in charge. The Lord is in charge, and the Lord will take care of us.
There is perhaps nothing as beautiful as the gift of a true friend. A friend can often be a reflection of God’s love for each of us. For that we are truly blessed.
Saint Alphonsus Liguori was a great moral theologian as well as the founder of the Redemptorists. He wrote in the areas of spirituality and doctrine to the edification of his diocese and others.
Jesus’ feeding the crowds provides rich teaching. First of all, it is an example of his compassion for those in need. It also looks forward to the Eucharist–through which Jesus will continue to feed thousands with his own body and blood.

Because Saint Francis saw the world with more than “intellectual appreciation or economic calculus,” he would sometimes sing in wonder at moon, stars or sun.
