Sports play such a big role in society. From children of young ages to professional athletes, sports serve as a form of entertainment.

While collegiate and professional sports are big business in this country, the Olympics feel like a purer celebration of sport somehow.

In this divine-soaked world, results have no bearing on who we are, which, quite literally, allows us to “play” with freedom and passion on the course of our lives.

Bonaventure walks in the footsteps of Francis just as Francis walked in the footsteps of Jesus.

As followers of St. Francis, we are called to navigate life’s challenges with grace, humility, and compassion—drawing strength from our faith and our Franciscan values as we encounter difficult situations.

The impetus to play is intended to help us transcend our base nature and advance humankind by the grace of God to Olympic heights.

Despite their differences, Francis and Bonaventure shared a love of God and a common vision of Christ as the center of creation and goal of spiritual maturity.

Perhaps in the only way I am like any of the elite athletes who compete at the Olympics, I can sometimes let circumstances overwhelm me or distract me from being present in the moment.

Light is at the heart of Bonaventure’s spiritual vision. Bonaventure’s God is a fountain of love and light.
