I thought my pilgrimage to Assisi would be aimed toward solitude, silence, and stillness. But I was surprised to find that the healing and peace I found came through people and conversations

As I look back over the decades since my stay in Assisi, I try to give my moments to the people and the animals in my life now.

Maybe Francis had the better way to follow—to do as God desires, with course corrections along the way, rather than sitting and fretting over what God really means.

Healing is ultimately a journey of interacting with water as a comforter, teacher, counselor, friend, or—as St. Francis named her—sister.

With the feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4, we as a Church—and beyond—take a moment to recognize the world-shaking faith and example of this holy man.
