Reflect One of the saddest realizations of our current culture is how polarized we Americans have become—politics, faith, how we treat people different than us.

In the second part of the Hail Mary, we say, “Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.” My fundamentalist brother wants to know how Mary can be the mother of God if God made Mary. How can I explain this?

I needed to remember who I was in the midst of this loss of control and rejection. I was the beloved.

Saint Francis of Assisi famously said, “Let us begin again, for up to now we have done nothing.” Each day is a new start to make a difference in the world around you, to soak up God’s mercy and love for you, and to try again to be the best version of yourself for the Lord.

The Western Church asserted the body and blood are present at the completion of the words of consecration. The Eastern Church supported the view that the real presence takes place through the epiclesis (the prayer for the sending or coming of the Spirit to sanctify the gifts of bread and wine).

Downward mobility. It invites each of us to recalibrate.

Today we remember those who have gone before us—especially those who may have no one to pray for them.

Is it all right to shop on Sunday if you really need something? Not long ago, my daughter asked me on a Sunday to check at a nearby store to get some special dishes for a party she was having. I did so and bought the dishes.

It wasn’t until God’s people utilized the lesson from the desert that they made Jericho’s walls fall to the ground.

All Saints’ Day reminds us that we are not alone on the journey. We’re surrounded by a cloud of witnesses, cheering us on.
