Reflect
We humans make a big deal about our differences. From favorite colors to choice of religion (or not at all), we tend to set ourselves up in a wide variety of groups. Unfortunately, this can easily lead to one group treating another as less than human, as we’ve seen time and again throughout history. Our differences can also be necessary and good, which just further muddies the waters about the seeming conflict brewing here between human individuality and oneness. In John 19:23, we read that Jesus was wearing a seamless garment just before he was crucified. I find this message to be incredibly impactful and a reminder that we are many in one.
Pray
Lord,
I see difference and, more alarming, division everywhere I turn.
The conflicts, hate, and war that have been spawned
by these divisions are a human creation, not divine.
But I also know you see us, all of us, always.
And your divine heart quakes with sadness when we turn on each other,
even using your name to justify our actions.
Help us to celebrate our differences and distinguish them from divisions,
And in doing so, remember that we’re all woven into your seamless garment.
Amen.

Is there an interfaith group near you? Perhaps there is a part of town you consciously or unconsciously stay away from. Is there a charity or ministry there that might change your perception? God often steers us to where we’re uncomfortable because God knows that’s where the real change we need lives.
