Father Jeremy Harrington, OFM, is the associate pastor at Transfiguration Parish in Southfield, Michigan. Previously he was the guardian of the Franciscan Monastery in Washington, DC, and Commissary of the Holy Land. There he worked to promote vocations, pilgrimages, and the national Good Friday Collection to support the ministry of the Franciscans in the Holy Land. In his many years as a Franciscan, he served as a teacher in high school, minister of the Province of St. John the Baptist, and editor and publisher of Franciscan Media.

It was an idyllic scene. It could have been an Impressionist’s painting of families vacationing at the beach: August sun, white sand, gentle surf of the Gulf, blue sky, fathers building sand castles with their daughters, mothers lathering their sons with lotion, people of all ages walking the beach. It was peaceful and serene. In the evening, grown-ups in beach chairs faced the west to watch the sun go down. When there are clouds, the sunset seems to span the Gulf of Mexico in a spectacular array of colors.
