Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

May 31, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 1:39-56

Mary and Elizabeth were given unique roles to play in God’s plan for the redemption of the world.

In the visitation scene each woman recognizes the importance of the other’s child in God’s saving enterprise. Elizabeth congratulates Mary for her willingness to participate in God’s saving work. Mary responds with the Magnificat–the great hymn of praise to the Lord for his saving outreach to humanity.

This scene reminds us that we too, participate in God’s plan of redemption. We have all been called to contribute to God’s providence. We have all been called to take joy in God’s intervention in our lives. Each of us can rightly make our own Mary’s words of praise and gratitude: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.”
