Clare of Assisi grew up in a wealthy, devout family, and likely was expected to marry. However, all that changed when she heard Francis of Assisi speak. Clare was still wearing her Palm Sunday finery when she ran away from home and became one of Francis’ first followers. She was the first superior of what would become the Poor Clares, known for their piety and austerity.
