There is a phenomenon—if there’s a scientific name, I don’t know of it—where the trees break and fall into one another’s arms. I’ve come to call these tree pietas.

Psalm 139 takes us all the way back to when we first became. It reveres the beauty of our very beginnings and returns us to the miracle of our mothers.

The psalms keep teaching me that to be emotionally and spiritually whole, there’s no drawing lines inside the human heart.

I hope we never forget to begin, again and again. To know, no matter what, that we are walking in love and beauty when we seek.

Where there is a mother, there is unity, there is belonging, belonging as children.

As another year draws to an end, let us pause before the manger and express our gratitude to God for all the signs of his generosity in our life and our history.
