Sometimes we might feel a sort of separateness from God—as if God is far away, up in heaven, or just not here in our world in our daily life. But God is always right here with us, no matter where we are or what we’re going through.

Reflecting on how Francis and the brothers honored Lady Poverty has helped me to see how they lived their walking in the footsteps of Christ.

Francis loved the earth, but his motion was always up and away from it toward some intangible tug at his heart from above.

To those who left all things, Jesus had promised eternal life and a hundredfold besides—now!

In keeping his eyes on the leper, in thinking only of this person before him, Francis forgot himself.

Francis loved that image of himself as a lute strung for rapture. He wanted to stand in the wind and let the Holy Spirit play upon him for all the world to hear the beauty of his music.
