The “blessed” Jesus refers to in the Beatitudes is deeper than mere happiness or luck; it is a deep, unshakable joy. And “merciful” means compassion, kindness, and forgiveness to all—even those we don’t think deserve it.

Dear Jesus,
the world needs unshakable, serene joy
as much as it needs compassion and kindness,
but we can find it only with your help.
Teach us to see innocence before guilt,
forgiveness before judgment.
Help us lift each other up
instead of kicking each other down.
Help us see you in each other.
