The spirituality of St. Francis is not so much about the heroic deed as it is about the heroic love with which even the smallest deed is done.

Francis himself realized that prayer or fasting cannot change one’s heart. Only God can.

In writing to a Poor Clare, St. Bonaventure said, “Your heart is to be an altar of God. It is here that the fire of intense love must burn always.”

Without prayer, we run the risk of forgetting who we have become, and slowly we begin to feel as if God is distant and uninterested.
