Part of the blessing of Christian life that the addressees enjoy is the Spirit of Christ. This was present in the prophets–moving them to search, investigate, and prophesy about the salvation that was to come. The same Spirit has also been present in the apostles–impelling them to testify in advance about the sufferings destined for Christ.
All those who preached the good news in advance to the Christian believers were serving these believers, not themselves. In view of this, the author encourages his hearers to live soberly and set their hopes on the revelation promised to them. They are called to be holy even as God is holy, and to give up their former sinful ways.
