Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 21:23-27

The elders in today’s reading from Matthew 11[21] knew that in order to understand Jesus, they would have to understand the source of his power. “Who gave you the authority to do what you’re doing?”

Jesus responds with another question. Where did John’s power come from? There’s only one answer to all these questions. The elders are afraid to say it. Jesus and John can only be explained by the power of God. And once we admit the power of God in them, a whole universe of conclusions follows.

The scribes’ challenge stands before us. Our salvation depends on the answer we give to the question they posed to Jesus: who are you and what are you all about?
