Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 17:22-27

In the beginning of today’s reading from Matthew, Jesus foretells his passion and death. He had already spoken of this to his disciples once before and would bring up the subject once again. Three times in all Jesus tells his followers what lies in store for him.

Apparently Jesus didn’t want his disciples to think that his suffering and death are accidental, unexpected, unforeseen. He prepares them for what lies ahead.

We too, have–and will have–suffering in our life and death also. This is not something that should surprise us. It’s not accidental. It’s part of our human existence and we have to receive it as such. If Jesus suffered and died, how can we expect our personal history to be any different?
