Speech is a dangerous gift. We have to know how to control it. The way in which we use our speech is a determinant factor in our whole moral quality.

Faith is more than an intellectual assent to certain truths. Faith involves action. It involves loving care for our neighbor, looking after those in need. Without such action faith is worthless.

In the Christian community there must be no discrimination based on position or wealth. Authentic worth consists in God’s election and God’s gifts.

Christian life is complex. It’s not something we can execute without focus and attention. The author of today's reading insists we must be clear about our purpose--not merely responding superficially to the Lord in our lives.

The Pharisees didn’t understand Jesus. His disciples didn’t, either. Jesus responds with frustration. Even now, Jesus keeps after us too, to deepen our grasp of him.

Jesus doesn’t force anyone to believe his teaching or accept the worth of what he promises. He gives us enough evidence to accept what he is all about and leaves the decision of faith and commitment to us.
