Daily Reading from the USCCB: James 2:14-24, 26
Now James gives us a little treatise on faith, specifically on the practicalities of faith. Faith is more than an intellectual assent to certain truths. Faith involves action. It involves loving care for our neighbor, looking after those in need. Without such action faith is worthless.
Merely believing is of no significance. After all the devil believes in God! Carrying out the implications of our faith in practice is what’s important. My works by themselves can demonstrate that I have faith, whereas claiming to have faith without works proves nothing.
Our father Abraham demonstrated his faith by his willingness to carry out God’s commands. He was a man of action, not just a man of faith. What does it mean to me to have faith?
