St. Martha of Bethany’s patronage includes single women and cooks. On one occasion, she prepares the meal for Jesus and possibly other guests. However, Martha’s greatest glory is her simple yet strong statement of faith in Jesus after her brother’s death.
This week we hear the well-known Gospel story of the Prodigal Son, in which the father embraces his son who has returned, much to the dismay of his other son.
Prominent in the history of the Catholic Church in Peru, Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo supported the rights of the native people. He was nominated to be Archbishop of Lima, Peru, by King Philip II of Spain. Not even a priest at the time, Turibius protested the assignment, but to no avail. He was ordained a bishop and sent to Peru.
The Gospel story today is the familiar one of the prodigal son, better titled “The Father Who Couldn’t Forget.” There our God is portrayed as the parent who waited day after day for his errant child to return.
As Jesus’ ministry evolves it will become clear that he offers his followers nothing less than participation in the life of God. This was more than the Jewish leaders could handle. So they set out to kill him.

Saint Nicholas Owen was a creative builder who helped the persecuted Catholic priests of England find hiding places. Because of his important work, the fact that he joined the Jesuits was held secret. Arrested a final time in 1606, Nicholas Owen was tortured and killed.

Blessed John of Parma lived at a crucial time in the Franciscan Order and the Church. Saint Francis’ followers were in need of reorganization and the Church was in schism. Blessed John helped with both issues.
The power of the prophets is not focused on those who are humanly closest to them. Their power is directed as God determines. God’s interests are much broader than ours.
