As a parent, I’m well aware of the art of compromise. In fact, I think it’s something that most parents are well versed in.
Saint Bernardine of Siena seems to have been a man with a whole lot of energy. He preached, reconciled cities, fought heresy, and attracted great crowds. Bernardine always traveled by foot, and often preached in more than one city on a given day. He is best known today for his great devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus.
Jesus isn’t calling us to kill ourselves for others, but he is calling us to make the well-being of others a primary element of our lives. My life is not about me. My life is about us.
As we find ourselves in the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, let us forget neither the sacrifice nor the trauma endured by healthcare workers around the world. Write a thank you card for the way they have served their communities during this pandemic.
Saint Theophilus of Corte is a saint known more by reputation than by facts. We know that he was a Franciscan, ordained priest, and served at a retreat house near Subiaco. Theophilus was known for his poverty and his preaching.
Jesus invites us to take joy in the awareness that we are loved–loved with the same love with which Father and Son love one another. It’s almost more than we dare imagine.
Jesus tells the disciples that he will be leaving them soon, but says that he will send the Holy Spirit to be with them.
Saint John I served as pope for about three years before he died of maltreatment at the hands of the emperor’s men. He had to face the Arian controversy and negotiate with the eastern part of the empire concerning the treatment of heretics.
Jesus assured his followers that he will send “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,” who will teach them and remind them of all Jesus told them. In effect, Jesus is promising that the Church can always rely on the Spirit to guide it in troubled times. The Spirit will help us discover the peace that Jesus gives.
