Joan of Arc heard voices of saints from an early age, and heeding those voices resulted in her leading the liberation of Orléans during the Hundred Years’ War between France and England. After some military setbacks, however, Joan ended up in enemy custody, and the French king she had helped put on the throne did nothing to rescue her. Joan was burned at the stake as a witch and heretic.
