Reflect
Many of us may recall the old English teacher adage: Show, don’t tell. In some sense, Jesus is saying the same thing when he says: “Even if you do not believe me, believe the works. . . .” (Jn 10:38). I guess that makes it good advice for writing and for life. When deciding who to trust, who to depend on, or who to ask for advice, we need to pay attention not only to what people say, but most importantly, to what they do. How do they behave? How do they treat others? It is through our works that we reveal who we truly are.
Pray
Blessed Virgin Mary,
when the angel appeared to you,
you revealed the fullness of your nature
by your complete submission to God’s will
in word and deed.
Your life revealed that you truly were
the handmaid of the Lord.
Act
One of the best ways to discovering God’s presence in your life is to allow God to reveal his love through you and to you. Find something you can do to serve others, and let God’s presence reveal itself through that service. Helping a neighbor, volunteering at a soup kitchen, tutoring students, becoming a homebound minister for your church: There are many ways to serve God and let God work through you. Pray for guidance, and like the Blessed Virgin, don’t be afraid to give yourself away.
