St Martin de Porres channeled his energies into doing chores—from barbering to cleaning—at a Dominican convent. Eventually, the community’s head disregarded the law restricting Martin from entry into the congregation, and allowed him to become a lay brother. Martin is remembered for his care of his confreres—not all of whom welcomed him—and of the poor.
