Reflect
Psalm 63 begins with a famous image of our soul thirsting for God, “in a land parched, lifeless, and without water.” God is the rest our weariness seeks, the sustenance we hunger for, the solace for which we thirst. In fact, as Augustine famously said: “Our hearts are restless until we rest in God.” But God is not only the object of our longing—not simply the goal—but, in some very real sense, God is found in the longing itself—like a spark longing to return to the flame.
Pray
O God,
You are my God, for you I seek,
my soul thirsts for you, like a parched, lifeless land without water,
so I search for you, O Lord.
My soul clings to you, O Lord, by night, and by day, I look for you.
And yet, you are always here.
Let me find rest in knowing that my hunger for you
is a sign of your love.
Act
Set aside five minutes to rest in the love of God, to allow the seed of faith to be planted in your heart, to be nourished by the silence. Listen to the silence stirring within you—notice the seed slowly opening, taking root. It is the love of God making a home within you. When you are ready, make the sign of the cross and let yourself return to your work and your life, renewed by that love.
