Louis Martin (1823-1894) experienced so much loss in just about 10 years: his beloved wife’s death, followed by the departure of his youngest daughter to join two older sisters in cloistered religious life. Despite physical and mental problems that led to his death a few years later, Louis did nothing to discourage Thérèse’s vocation.
