Reflect
How many times have you seen this image or perhaps you’ve done it yourself? Two friends sit across from each other at a restaurant, not talking to each other, but instead checking their phones. They’ve gone out of their way to get together, but instead of being together, they sit looking down at small screens, looking through messages, pictures, alerts, and memories. Apparently unaware of how absurd it is, they can end up perpetually doomscrolling as they sit with each other. Like Lot’s wife, we become just a couple of pillars of salt.
Pray
Lord,
Like Lot’s wife, I, too, am frightened of change,
of the difficulties and the demands of new places,
new people, new challenges.
Give me the courage and the faith to trust in you
and in your grace to keep me safe
from harm and nourished always by your love.
Act
When you are with family, friends, a coworker, or even a stranger, put away your phone, silence it, and give them your complete attention. Our presence, our attention is our best gift—it bears witness to the value and importance of the person we are with. Take a moment to read Genesis 19 and the story of Lot and his wife, and ask yourself what it really means to become a “pillar of salt.”
