There are so many ways in which we are gifted. Some people can make us laugh. Others listen well. Still others can cook or garden. Jesus clearly tells us that we are not only gifted but we are also called to live that gift—not hide it under a bushel basket.

I like the idea of an enthused God. It stands in meaningful contrast to the stern judgmental Old Testament God of my youth. I lack the gift of enthusiasm but witness it through some loved ones blessed with that gift.

We all know we are called to love our neighbor, but many of us forget the rest of that commandment—to love ourselves. Some confuse love of self with being self-centered. Jesus can help us quiet the inner voice of condemnation and replace it with his gentle words, “I am with you always.”

My mother lost two girls and rarely talked about them. Yet on her deathbed she said, “I’m going to see my girls.” Even in silence, they were always with her. So it is for many women.
