In today’s story Daniel describes and interprets the king’s dream. The point is to show Daniel’s wisdom, and that the kingdoms of the Gentiles would all pass away.

The “Book of Daniel” consists partially of stories about Daniel and his friends, and also provides an account of revelations given to Daniel about the future.

We may not always see God’s punishment inflicted or recognize it as such, but we know that God is a god of justice, and that God’s enemies never have the last word.

The rededication of the temple enabled the Jews to reassert their identity. They were God’s people. He was their God.

There are times when people must say no to the society in which they live. Sometimes saying no is hard, but not saying no can be even more demanding in the long run.

Today’s passage is one of the earliest examples of faith in the resurrection. Torment and persecution are not the last words.

The Second Book of Maccabees offers narratives of perseverance in the face of persecution. Sometimes we are called to stand up for what we believe. We shouldn’t be surprised.
