Jesus was criticized for the people with whom he hung around. Jesus is still interested in those who are on the margins–who need attention and healing. That’s why he bothers with us.

Jesus is still powerful today. He still forgives sins. He still reaches out to the sick. All he requires from us is confidence in his power.

Today the Church celebrates two great men: St. Peter and St. Paul. There are chapters in the lives of most of us of which we are not proud. But Jesus can make something of us all.

Being with Jesus is more important than having a place to live, more important than the most basic duties of human family. These are awesome demands that Jesus makes, then and now.

When we say that Mary loves us we are speaking about her determination to do what is good for us, to lead us where Jesus wants us to go. Holy Mary, mother of God, keep loving us!

The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is about God’s love for his people–a strange sort of love. For him the one who needs the most attention is the one who gets the most attention. It’s a matter of loving, and God’s love isn’t governed by logic.
