As this old year ends we might want to renew our dedication to the Lord, our commitment to faith in him, our gratitude for the gifts he has given us.

The author of the “Letter of John” is writing for people at different stages of life who have experienced forgiveness of sin and knowledge of Christ.

Being a believer is not a matter of abstraction and theory. It involves practice–the practice of love for all others who follow him.

Each of us is a sinner to a greater or lesser extent. If we say that we are without sin we are deceiving ourselves.

These sentiments of Jesus and Stephen expressed in today’s Responsorial Psalm should be part of our spiritual equipment, too. We are all called to give ourselves to the Father, to have confidence in him.

We read Isaiah’s words today with gratitude because we know they are addressed to us, and God’s words are never spoken in vain.

God promises to raise up an heir for David whose kingdom will be firm and will last forever. This promise is fulfilled in Jesus and in his community of believers.
