Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

September 8, 2021
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Romans 8:28-30

Today we leave Paul’s Letter to the Colossians to celebrate the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans chosen for today outlines the Christian vocation as it was designed by God: to be conformed to the image of the Son who is to be the firstborn among many. Mary shared this vocation in a providentially special way.

God’s redemptive action on behalf of those who would accept salvation had been in process since the beginning of the world. They were foreknown, called, predetermined. This doesn’t mean that God is arbitrary. Rather, these actions express the thought and care that God takes for Christians’ salvation. God’s plan includes the Virgin Mary’s cooperation and calls for our gratitude.
