Sharing the Word for September 24, 2021

Friday of the Twenty-fifth Week in Ordinary Time

September 24, 2021
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Haggai 2:1-9

The reconstruction of the temple is under way. Many felt that it could not possibly rival the splendor of the temple of Solomon. But Haggai proclaims this oracle of encouragement.

The Lord will be present in this house. Its glory–enhanced by the offerings of the Gentiles–will surpass the splendor of the former temple. This temple will still be a sign of God’s covenant with Israel. The external sign of the covenant may be less imposing, but the Lord’s promise will be just as real and strong.

No less than six times in this brief pronouncement God emphasizes his power and his determination to maintain his covenant with his people. “Thus says the Lord of hosts.” Still today the Lord looks after his people.
