Daily Reading from the USCCB: Luke 11:27-28
This short reading is more about our relationship with God’s word than about our natural family.
The woman in the crowd calls out that Jesus’ mother must be very proud having a Son like him. Jesus doesn’t deny that his mother is blessed through her relationship with him. But more important than physical relationships he says, are relationships with God that arise from hearing the word of God and keeping it.
What’s important to all of us is not family background, but being in touch with the word of God. Being “born Catholic” isn’t of much use to us if it doesn’t bring us closer to God and to God’s word. Human relationships are important. But more important is our relationship with God.
