Sharing the Word for March 23, 2022

Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent

March 23, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 5:17-19

One of the recurrent complaints that Jesus’ enemies bring against him is his attitude toward the Jewish law. In today’s reading Jesus offers an answer to their complaints. He has not come, he says, to do away with the law or the prophets. Rather, he has come to give them a new, enriched meaning.

As Jesus’ ministry evolves it will become clear that he offers his followers nothing less than participation in the life of God. The “new law” will not primarily be a new code of behavior that supersedes the Jewish law, but rather a new context in which to carry out our relationship with God. This was more than the Jewish leaders could handle. So they set out to kill him.
