Sharing the Word for June 27, 2022 – Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time – Year 2

Monday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time

June 27, 2022
Daily Reading from the USCCB: Matthew 8:18-22

In the midst of these narratives about miracles, Matthew inserts some discipleship teaching. What is required to be a disciple?

The first man asks where Jesus is going so that he can go with him. And Jesus says there’s no answer to that question since he, Jesus, has no place to go. Then another man–seemingly already Jesus’ follower–asks to be permitted to go home to bury his father, to take care of one of the most important duties of family membership. And Jesus answered that nothing is more important than following him.

Being with Jesus is more important than having a place to live, more important than the most basic duties of human family. These are awesome demands that Jesus makes–then and now.
