Victims of the French Revolution, these blesseds witnessed to their faith by refusing to take a civil oath which amounted to a denial of their faith. On a single day in Paris, 185 people were martyred.
February 18. Blessed John of Fiesolo, a Dominican Friar, is also known as Fra. Angelico. He is famous for his devotional artwork and used his talents to praise God through paint. All talents can be used to praise God.
March 21. Blessed John of Parma lived at a crucial time in the Franciscan Order and the Church. Saint Francis’ followers were in need of reorganization and the Church was in schism. Blessed John helped with both issues.
June 12. Blessed Jolenta of Poland and her husband assisted many from their means. Once widowed, and with two of her three daughters married, Blessed Yolenta and her third daughter entered the Poor Clares. She eventually became an abbess.
June 25. Blessed Jutta of Thuringia, a noble woman with children, became a widow at a young age. She used her means to provide for the children, but once they were grown, she disposed of her wealth, became a Secular Franciscan, and lived a life of austerity.
February 24. Was Blessed Luke Belludi just at the right place at the right time, or was there something more at work in his happening to meet Saint Anthony and become his protégé? We would all agree that this is how the Lord works─through convenient happenstances.
October 13. When Marie-Rose Durocher was 29, Bishop Ignace Bourget became bishop of Montreal. He faced a shortage of priests and sisters and a rural population that had been largely deprived of education. Bishop Bourget founded the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, with Marie-Rose as its first member and co-foundress.
January 30. Blessed Mary Angela Truszkowska founded the Felician Sisters as a result of a conversion experience she had while convalescing from an illness. At the age of 44 she was forced to resign due to ill health. She lived, however, into her 70s.
December 15. Blessed Mary Frances Schervier founded the Sisters of the Poor of Saint Francis, devoted to caring for the poor of this world. To this day they run hospitals and homes for the aged in the United States and around the world. Blessed Mary Frances died in 1876.
May 4. Little biographical data is available for Blessed Michael Giedroyc, but we do know that he was physically handicapped and that this caused him great suffering during his lifetime. But, despite his difficulties, Blessed Michael coped well, due in part to his rich spiritual life.
