Faith and Family

Day Fifteen: A Catholic Family Advent

Scripture

Jesus said to them, “Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.”

— Luke 3:11

Reflection

If there is one thing I have always tried to emphasize to my kids, it is how fortunate they are. Of course, because they are kids, they do not always get it. To them, it is just Mom saying one more thing. That is, until they came to pick me up from work one day and saw a homeless man sleeping on the steps of the church next door. They asked what he was doing, and I explained that he was probably homeless and had nowhere else to go. When I looked at them, I could tell they were having an “aha” moment. Suddenly, they had a face to put with my words.

Talk Together

If you had a lot of money, would you use it to help those less fortunate? How?

Prayer

Lord, remind us to be thankful for all that we have, and to remember to help those who are not as fortunate.

Activity

Many parishes and organizations have opportunities during Advent for families to help others in need. Take advantage of those opportunities. Go through your closets and donate nice, lightly used clothing, or collect your change during the month and make a donation to a charity on which you all decide.
