Ask a Franciscan

Did Mary Vow Virginity Before the Annunciation?

Q: Since being in a Catholic grade school over 70 years ago, I have been under the impression that Mary, the mother of Jesus, made a vow of virginity even before the Annunciation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says nothing about this. Was my impression incorrect?

A: Yes, it was incorrect. There is no basis in Scripture for saying that she made such a vow. Some people may have thought that they were honoring Mary by saying that she had made such a vow.
