Reflect
More times than I care to remember, on the day after Thanksgiving I have witnessed adults devolve into angry mobs in order to lay claim to the latest and most popular toy or item for that year. Welcome to Black Friday, the day when society’s obsession with material things is on full display. We can even see it in people’s decorations, many of which will be put up today. The bigger and more elaborate, the better. The Christmas season isn’t about all those material things, though. The true purpose of this season is one of waiting–for the only gift we truly need.
Pray
Lord,
Help me remember
That the true meaning
of this season lies
not in the gifts and possessions
But rather in the true
meaning of Advent–the anticipation
of the birth of Christ.
May I be reminded of that
each time I begin to feel
the commercial tug of the
holiday season.
Act
As hard as it can be, try to resist the urge to do any shopping today. Use this day to just rest and continue giving thanks for all the gifts with which you have been blessed. There will be plenty of time to get your holiday errands done.
