Sharing the Word for September 27, 2021 – Twenty-sixth Week in Ordinary Time – Year 1

Memorial of Saint Vincent de Paul

Daily Reading from the USCCB: Zechariah 8:1-8

Another oracle of encouragement for the returned exiles. The prophet speaks in terms of energy and youth. Old people will enjoy security in the renewed Jerusalem. The city will be filled with young people–however improbable that may seem now. God will bring back those who have not returned from exile. “They shall be my people and I will be their God with faithfulness and justice.”

Scholars look on Zechariah as a messianic prophet, speaking for the age when God’s plans for his people will be fulfilled. We enjoy the fulfillment of the messianic age in Christ and his people. We are a people filled with the energy and youth of the risen Christ. We dwell in a new Jerusalem. We offer God our thanks.
